Yanks Lose Series to White Sox

The Yankees lost the rubber match of a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Masahiro Tanaka has been dependable to start the year but was blown up in the 4th inning. He served up a grand slam to SS Tim Anderson and could not get an out in the 5th.
The Yankee bats scored one run in the first and third, showing some promise against the White Sox SP Carlos Rodon, but that was all they could muster up. After that, the Yanks did not cause a threat as they only tallied four hits for the game.
FINAL: White Sox 5 Yankees 2

National Championship Preview

One of these teams will win its schools first National Title. Virginia has showed great perseverance after getting knocked off by 16 seeded UMBC last year. Virginia has had some clutch shots and definitely some luck to get to this point. Tech has sailed pretty smoothly in the tournament with Gonzaga being its toughest game.
Both teams are stout on defense, Virginia ranks number one in the country in scoring defense while Tech is third. Virginia is 4th in the country in three-point field goal defense while Tech is 10th. It will be a slug fest and scoring will be hard to come by.

The individual matchup to watch has to be the potential lottery picks, De’Andre Hunter and Jarrett Culver. Culver will have to score more than 9 points in which he had vs Michigan State but that will be tough against the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in Hunter.
If Virginia wants to be crowned, they are going to have to hit their three’s. It sounds obvious but against a great defensive team driving to the tin will be hard. Virginia might be able to exploit some inside due to the sprained ankle of Tariq Owens. Owens was seen in a walking boot early Monday afternoon and has been a great rim protector. The Senior Grad transfer from St. Johns is averaging 2.6 blocks per game in the tournament.

The slow pace of both teams might be a yawner for the casual fan but there are multiple future NBA players in this game that also features two of the best Head Coaches in America. We are in for a treat that tips off at 9:20pm ET on CBS.

THIS GUY LIKES THE MADNESS

Virginia looked stress free when they stretched their lead to 10 vs Auburn with just 5:24 to play. However, with 4:32 left in the second half, Virginia Guard Ty Jerome would head to the bench after picking up his fourth foul. This sparked Auburn as they outscored Virginia 11-0 when Jerome went to the bench. All of the sudden Auburn was in the driver’s seat. Auburn had its biggest lead of 4 with just 14 seconds left. Virginia Guard Kyle Guy would hit a huge three to cut the lead to one with nine seconds left. After splitting a pair at the free throw line Auburn was up two when the officials seemed to have missed a double dribble call on Jerome. Auburn had fouls to give which left Virginia only 1.5 seconds to come up with a miracle.
Guy flared to the corner and rose for a three. As Guy was in the air, he was slightly bumped by Auburn’s Samir Doughty with 0.6 on the clock. This led to Guy having 3 free throw attempts with a chance to put Virginia in the National Championship for the first time in school history. Guy would nail all 3 free throws giving Virginia the controversial one-point victory. “I could lie to you and say I knew I was going to hit them, but I was terrified.” Said Guy after the game with a smile.

Tech Knocks Off Sparty

Texas Tech and Michigan State was a rock fight in the first half. The defenses of both teams were excellent and had plans to focus on each team’s main weapon. It was clear that Texas Tech Head Coach Chris Beard was not going to let Cassius Winston beat them offensively. Winston was 4-16 from the field in large part to the defense of graduate transfer Matt Mooney. Mooney was fantastic leading the Red Raiders with 22 points. Mooney’s scoring was much needed, especially when BIG 12 Player of The Year Jarrett Culver’s first field goal came with 9 minutes to go in the second half. Mooney connected on 3 consecutive long balls that gave Tech a 13-point lead. With three minutes to go, the lead was cut down to 1 but Michigan State could not capitalize. Michigan State had back to back turnovers and Culver would hit a dagger three. Tech scored the last 9 points of the game after Michigan cut it to 1. Just like Virginia, Texas Tech is playing in its first National Championship game.
